You aren't a baby anymore, but your still not a big kid. You can get your own drink of water, but still will spill most of it on the floor while walking away screaming no when asked to clean it up. You don't quite have the potty thing down, but you are oh so close.

Four is tough (as is 5 and 6 and 38). You are coming into your own, making your own way in the world and learning from your own mistakes. You are a problem solver that doesn't take no or hold on a minute for an answer!

Double exposure of fire and water with little girl Fire and water You have the strength of both fire and water to push your way through life

You have the strength of both fire and water to push your way through anything you want. You can burn the rules fiercely, with loud anger, but you have also been known to flow around obstacles with grace and quietness. If you can't get your way with force you have learned to wait it out and sail in when no one is looking. Traits that I am sure will elevate you to President one day or whatever you put your mind too.

Your facial expression change from second to second, from sweetness to boredom to aggravation and back to sweetness. You can flip a switch to cycle through your emotions so fast, something that I am sure will come in handy as you grow older.

You are tough, smart, sweet and beautiful.

You will go far in life!

A Year in Review for 2017 {Family Photographer | Lithia, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/12/a-year-in-review-for-2017-family-photographer-lithia-fl

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Wow, this year has been awesome!

From headshots to street photography, bar mitzvahs to weddings, plus all of the wonderful families that let me into their homes and their lives!

I continued to grow in both business and personal, learning more about what fills my soul through my art.

There were many highs and lows and a 365 project that died somewhere around August.

I shot my first full Day In The Life session, getting the chance to remind a beautiful mother just how wonderful her life really is.

I had many sessions highlighting just how awesome normal real life is!

I took an awesome trip to Seattle and learned so much cool stuff, forged new friendships and had some all-important alone time. I learned a lot about myself as an artist that really helped me hone why I photograph the way I do. My son and I also took a 4 hour drive to Miami to see Pete Souza speak about his time as White House Photographer.

Above all, I am thank you to you!

You allow me into your home, to spend lots of hours in intimate moments.
We have laughed together, shed tears, and this year I added more friends to my list than just clients!

Looking forward into 2018 things will be a little quiet around here. I have a few sessions in the editing queue and when they are done I have some much-needed family time and a little traveling to catch up on. I hope to get the kids north for some white stuff this winter!

When things kick up again I will have a photography 101 class and one on product photography on the calendar, plus some new ventures into partnerships with local businesses. Real life photography isn't just about family life, it includes all kinds of life!

I will have more products to offer my family clients for their walls and more ways to celebrate your real life!!

Hear's hoping your New Year rings in true with lots of love, surrounded by those that make you smile!

Thanks!

XO, Kelly

A Day In The Life {A Family Film About Real Life | Family photographer | Brandon, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/12/a-day-in-the-life-a-family-film-about-real-life-family-photographer-brandon-fl Mom Life

Sometimes we get so busy being a parent we forget how beautiful being a mom is, how beautiful our life really is. We think it's boring, not exciting enough for someone to photograph it. So many people ask, what do we do and I when I say just be you, they look at me like I have 3 heads.

I get it, I understand the feeling that things have to be extraordinary to be worthy of a photograph. That we think we have to show our best faces to the world, don't show the dirt or the "normal" things, clean before company comes over, hide all the "stuff" in the closet.

You don't know me from Steve, but trust me, our lives are perfect just the way they are. Our life is our own and there is beauty in that, beauty in that simplicity.

Just being in our life is enough.

These images represent how gorgeous our everyday life really is! That our kids make messes and do their own laundry (well some of our kids do). That life is dirty and fun and boring but that is ok! That not every day is extraordinary but it's our every day that makes up our life! The day in and day out grind that makes the days turn into years.

This is the life of a mom. A mom doing her best to make life work while her husband is deployed. To get her kids to school on time, to make sure they have healthy choices on the table, to order pizza on the days that just need to be simpler. To be the only rock until the time when she has her own rock to lean on. To just make things work and do and be.

This is a family just being a family. With fights and giggles, hard work and quiet moments. It's siblings stepping in to help, sometimes with a smile and sometimes not.

This is life. Real Life. Normal Life.

This beautiful.

{PS don't get lost in all the beautiful images that you miss the film of this gorgeous family at the end}

What it means to document {Family photographer | Lithia, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/12/what-it-means-to-document-family-photographer-lithia-fl Family on the Beach. Photographer. Tampa, FL Defining family photographyUsing my own vision to define family photography

To document.

To record something in photographic form. A memorialized representation of thought.

To prove.

But what are we proving? Are we proving that we existed? Existed as a family, existed as parents, that our children had a childhood, that we did those "activities"?

In the photographic world, there is a big debate about it actually. Those that lay close to the definition of a photojournalism and those that document with their own vision. They tell the story in their own words, with bias and feeling, not clinging to the holds of a photojournalist. Is there room for both of these? Do they need to be well labeled as to which is which? I believe they do, but there is room for both!

This whole thought process really started for me after a conversation recently about the difference between lifestyle photography and documentary photography. Lifestyle is generally more pretty, pretty clothes, pretty places, pretty light. There is direction, posing. Documentary in it's pure form adheres to the definition of photojournalism. Shoot the scene as you see it, don't change things, don't move things, don't show bias or impart your own feelings.

I wondered where others fell on the spectrum and a fabulous photographer said "I definitely do not shoot strait documentary in the full definition of family documentary. I shoot what is happening artistically, focusing my in camera and post {processing} with a lot of depth/mood and focus on light and shadows" (thanks Lori from Lori Mack Photography for this line).

"I shoot what is happening artistically".

This line resonated with me. It's often how I shoot my own children. Taking the moment and bringing it forth with my own artistic vision.

Then in another group the conversation came up about Sally Mann. She is often talked about as a documentary photographer, but as a good friend pointed out, she isn't in the true form. She documents life, but not in a photojournalistic way. She executes a particular vision instead of taking what comes as it is. (Thank you Katie from Red Turtle Photography, make sure you check out her latest project)

"executes a particular vision instead of taking what comes as it is."

As an artist I have found myself struggling with the labels and definitions. I document not for the sake of my own posterity, but for the sake of humanity. I chose "documentary" photography because that aligns with who I am as a person. I am interested in stories of people, childhood, motherhood, life. I want to tell those stories as true as I can, but I am coming to the conclusion that there are times that I want to impart my own vision on those stories. That while I might not manipulate the scene, it’s my own vision of the scene that I want to record. That might be the shadow of childhood, dark and moody or the fuzzy thoughts of life of a newborn's first few days. That emotion trumps all things, even if that emotion is boredom. That I want to shoot what I feel, not just what I see and those feeling automatically impart some bias.

boy raking the yarddefining the term documentary for meUsing my own vision to document the stories around me

Then I read this statement by a wonderful photographer in Australia (Thank you Justine Curan Photography), "I also am accepting myself that I am indeed an artist and by trying to fit into a label is actually rather limiting and all I do is need to give myself Permission to create and explore. That's allowed, in fact encouraged in the field of art. Why on earth are we sticking to our corners saying ours is better than yours!! Rather than just exploring all corners and see what we like and what we can do with all of them!"

"by trying to fit into a label is actually rather limiting and all I do is need to give myself Permission to create and explore"

Give myself permission.

I am learning that for myself, I don't have the thought process to be a planner. I don't want to pose people, I don't want to tell them what to do, but I do want to give myself permission to guide people, to follow a vision when I see it in the moment. To create the art I want which might be different at different times.

To give myself permission to just create art. To be an artist through photography.

So then it brings the question, does there have to be a label? If I use no label at all minus the word photographer, do I have to follow any rules? Am I still documenting childhood if I ask that child to sit still and stare at me? Do I just need to improve my skills to get that image without having to ask? To have the anticipation of capturing that moment. Can I get those moments that I want in an hour session? What if I free lens in a session, is that still documenting or am I executing my vision at that point? Does it really F*ing matter?

photographer. Tampa, FL Double ExposureCreating the art that we want

photographer. Tampa, FL Double ExposureCreating the art that we want

So now, the stranger that I am, is giving you permission to just be you. Create your art, get out of the box, be your own artist. If you want to follow rules, go for it, but don't feel bound to them if you don't want to be.

Stop trying to do what you think people want and do what you want.

Follow your soul, not the herd.

So you just had this awesome session. All your fun favorite images are laying in front of you on the table and I am sitting across from you. You are sorting through your proofs, making your YES, NO and Maybe piles, all the while thinking to yourself, what the F am I going to do with all these perfect family photos. How am I going to decide what goes where?

I LOVE family albums! I have many of them on my shelf, both the old sticky clear page kind of me naked as a baby (or toddler) and more modern books of my own naked kids. I love putting them together and I love it when clients order them (yes, that's a lot of love). I also really love it when I see family stories on walls! I recently just placed a 3' X 4' (yes FOOT) print on my wall of my kids naked raking the yard! I am also running out of wall space!

I totally understand how hard it can be to narrow down that set of images to one or three to put on the wall! That's where storyboards come into play! I will happily help you design the perfect collage to hang the whole story from either some preset designs or something that matches your style perfectly!

They can be prints that you will frame, metal prints ready to hang or wood block prints (also ready to hang)! Don't want to hang them? Don't want to frame them? Just order a beautiful print and set it on your mantle or a shelf! This takes all the work out if it!

Want to see some awesome examples both sitting on my shelf and some layouts? Ok, I can do that!

Real life family documentary photography, Tampa, FL

The time of year when we break out the boxes of decorations from the attic, blast holiday music and dance in our pj's while decorating the tree. At least this is how we do it at my house. I have a love-hate relationship with the holidays and decorating. I mean I love the thought of it, the smell of the fresh Christmas tree, the twinkling lights, the spiked eggnog. Then comes the ocd ornament placement and fights with the kids, the dropping needles and the silly elf that so far my kids have forgotten about.

Ah, Christmas, so much joy, so much pain.

This family did it right! They let the kids place ornaments (and waited till they weren't looking to move them). They enjoyed the day just having fun, hanging out in their pj's and singing deck the halls.

This is how decorating the tree should be. Maybe I can learn a lesson.

That time my kid met Pete Souza {Documentary Photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/11/that-time-my-kid-met-pete-souza-documentary-photographer-tampa-fl Yes, I have been a little Pete Souza obsessed lately. He is currently on a book tour promoting his new photo book "Obama, An Intimate Portrait" and is making the rounds on all the talk shows etc. While I thoroughly enjoy his latest subject, more than that it is him as a photojournalist that blows me away. The way he frames his subject, the thought process on the story he will portray with that 1/160 of a second snapshot into a moment. Those are the things that I strive for in my own work. To capture the emotion of the moment, to make sure the composition is right to make the image stronger, to show that real life is wonderful.

About a month ago I had a dear friend post about going to see Pete talk in Portland. As a photojournalist herself she wanted to encourage others to go see him.  I thought, hmmm that would be cool, let me look at the schedule, I doubt he will be coming anywhere near here. As I scrolled through the dates and places I found that the closest he would be was in Miami, an 8 hour round trip drive. I thought oh well, maybe sometime in the future I will make it happen, but not this time. I posted to my friend those exact words and she replied, why wait, why not go? So I did.

Not only did I go, but I brought along my little budding 6 year old photographer. I knew the trip would be long, with lots of waiting in lines and sitting still, but I also knew this was an opportunity that he would love. He has been begging for a camera for Christmas (don't tell him that he is getting one) and he sees what I do and is ready to be like mom! He also loves any and all adventures especially ones with just mom.

People sitting on step watching a TV outside the hall at the book fairMiami Book FairPeople watching at the Miami Book Fair

Our day started with a little people watching. We got there fairly early, but we also knew the line to get in (Even with our tickets) was going to be massive. I had really no idea what we were getting into with the book fair in general and knew our time there would be focused on one thing. The line was long, the wait hot, the bounding energy of a 6 year old boy that had been in the car for 4 hours overflowing. He ran along the stairs throwing his toys on the floor from the top and going down to get them. Anything to burn off some of that energy was cool with me.

He also spent lots and lots of time watching the Miami Metromover, he is obsessed with all things train, tram, monorail, or people mover.

After our long wait, the excitement of the crowd and listening to Pete talk, we started to head out. Kiddo begged for the book (which I had planned to get anyway) and he totally wanted to hang out in another long line for an autograph! I was surprised but totally game. I mean how cool would that be and my kid wants to do it! We were the very last one in line and as the time quickly passed I asked him if he had a certain image that was his favorite to be signed. It took him all the time in line to find that perfect one. He knew which one he wanted but he couldn't find it..... the pressure was starting to get to him. Just in the nick of time the book opened to the just the right page.

We got our autograph, my son smiled from ear to ear and we started to head out. There is talk of escalators versus stairs, more throwing of animals and me sitting at the bottom of the stairs waiting on him. I knew he was headed down and I had my camera in hand, just adjusting my settings from dark inside to bright outside when I look up and see Pete Souza shaking my son's hand. I had a fraction of a second, I spun the wheel on my camera as fast as I could to get it right and I snapped. Is the image perfect? Nope, I blew out the highlights by overexposing, I missed the composition, there is a pole in my kids face. Do I care? Nope, this will still get printed and go on my wall!

We headed off to continue our brief tour of the book fair and then went to find food before our long trip back through the glades to head home. We hit up 180 Degrees at the DRB for the best grilled cheese (with bacon) I have ever eaten and a Lemon Lager draft that was super yummy. Kiddo insisted we climb to the platform for the metromover to watch it and then we started our long trek home stopping a few times in the glades before it got dark.

A lesson about real life from the guy that photographed the president http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/11/a-lesson-about-real-life-from-the-guy-that-photographed-the-president Boy and lovies on escalatorEscalators at the airportHaving fun riding the escalators at Tampa International Airport. Real life family documentary photographer. Tampa, FL

Have you ever heard the name, Pete Souza?

Today I took my kids to ride the escalators and watch planes take off and land at the airport. What I thought would be cheap entertainment, ended up costing me 16 bucks in parking, but it was worth every penny. Let's just say the had a blast. There was singing on an empty stage, lots of yelling and pointing, plus Wendy's Frostys.

One the way home I happen to turn on one of my favorite radio shows, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and today's interview as fate would have it was with Pete Souza.

Pete Souza is a freelance photographer working as a photojournalist for National Geographic, Chicago Tribune, and many other very recognizable names. His top job was official Whitehouse photographer for 2 presidents, including all eight years with President Obama.

When he was approached to document the life of President Obama, he stated that he had one requirement, he wanted unlimited access to the President. He wanted to be there for the day in, day out routine of the life of a president.

The response that he was given
"Don't worry, the President Gets It!"

Those words "He gets it", struck a chord with me. I know that not everyone gets the way I photograph. I know this photojournalistic style of real life doesn't strike a chord with everyone, and that is ok! It's more than ok, it means that I have lots of photographer friends that I can refer people too that don't want my style of work! Total win-win!

Souza talked about how President Obama hated to pose for a portrait. He put the value in real life photographs over those posed, stiff pictures.

In the forward of Souza's book "Unguarded Moments: Behind-the-Scenes Photographs of President Reagan," Former Sen. Howard Baker Jr. said that Souza recorded "some of the most intimate, honest and humanizing scenes of the presidency I've ever seen."

Intimate
Honest
Human
Real

The way he talked about photographing the President of the United States is exactly how I photograph families.

Today I had it confirmed to me that people that get this genre of photography, really get it. They get me! They are my kind of people. The kind you spend 2 hours just talking about family and life with after the kids have gone to bed and you have been photographing their family for last 13 hours.

Today I learned that you don't have to be president to be photographed like one!

Want to hear the whole interview with Pete Souza?
Check this link out:
Photographer Pete Souza Reflects On 8 Years (And 1.9 Million Photos) Of Obama

Then tell me your thoughts about having your family photographed this way! Are you in the "I Get It Club?"

XOXO,
Kelly

Real or Fake, the Christmas Family Tradition {Real life family photographer | Lithia, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/11/real-or-fake-the-christmas-family-tradition-real-life-family-photographer-lithia-fl Real Tree or Fake Tree for Christmas?

I feel like there are two distinct people in the world, those that insist on filling their house with the fresh smell of pine every Christmas season and those that love that prelit, non-needle dropping green plastic bush sitting in the corner. Now don't get me wrong, I totally understand the desire of the prelit green bush, but dude nothing beats the smell of a fresh cut Douglas Fir.

It starts with the hunt for the perfect tree.

Not just any old pine tree will do. Here in Florida, we have lots of great pines, but not the perfect Christmas tree kind. Although one year my mom and I totally had a sand pine that made a pretty cute Charlie Brown tree. Anyway, around here you either go to the local tent on the corner, the big box store to get a tree that has been freshly shipped from some other state OR you tromp out to one of the few local Christmas tree farms and still end up buying a freshly shipped in tree from another state. If you are really adventurous you can cut your own tree down at the farm, but I promise those trees are never the perfect tree!

Luckily this fun family dragged me along on their hunt for the perfect family Christmas tree.

Our day started as any typical day with toddlers starts... chasing them to put clothes on and get ready in general.

After a few hugs, a little more chasing and some shoes, we were off on an adventure to find that perfect tree.

Great trees take time to hunt down. It's a long trek to head off into the wilds of the local tree farm. It takes patience, persistence and candy.

With the hunt narrowed down to the perfect place. It was time to set off on the adventure of the finding just the right one. This adventure included hay rides, petting the horse and general fun times before making it back home to decorate. Santa's Christmas Tree Forest provided the perfect hunting grounds for a fun afternoon.

After much consideration of size, greenness, smell, and shape, the tree is then bagged and strapped down to make the long journey to its final destination.  It was then ready to be adorned with baubles, memories and shiny ornaments. Now comes the real fun part, decorating with 2 littles running around. Trying to keep your children from pulling the tree over, breaking those priceless heirloom ornaments, electrocuting themselves with the lights and any other mayhem they might be contemplating is the first hurdle. . We always have these grand expectations of singing and giggling, dancing to Christmas music while drinking hot cocoa. In reality, we are chugging some kind of alcohol, trying not to lose our sh*t and just get the darn tree put up. Hopefully, if you are like this awesome mom you can strike the balance between pulling your hair out and having lots of fun with your family!

Do you put the tree up with the whole family or does no one else want to participate? Is it a family tradition for everyone to gather the day after Thanksgiving or are you lucky to get it up the week before Christmas? Are you a real fan or a fake fan?

Mom Life | How it looks versus How it feels {Real Life Family Photographer, Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/10/mom-life-how-it-looks-versus-how-it-feels-real-life-family-photographer-tampa-fl real life family photographer, Lithia, FL Mom LifeHow our lives as parents feels compared to the life we show

There are lots of words that can describe mom life.

Love

Hard

Joyous

Long

Servitude

Unconditional

Emotional

Rewarding

Chaos

Real

Raw

Amazing

The list goes on and on.

This life can be full of highs and lows all in the same moment. The way we perceive our day in and day out can be totally different than the story we tell to the outside world. The way our lives look and the way our lives feel can cover both ends of the spectrum at the same time. We often put on a show for the world. We might have joke about how hard our day was, how we need another bottle of wine (beer for me) or vat of coffee, but there is a truth behind those jokes. We work long hard hours either as a stay at home parent or a working parent. We stay up late to catch those few moments of me time with the house quiet. We worry over things out of our control, things in the future and things we could change. We are mentally and physically exhausted. Our brains never shut off and Dad's we know you are in these shoes too. Our whole house often feels like it's in a continual state of turmoil.

Why is this?

Why do we put on a brave face for the outside world, always saying things are fine? Why are our lives so full of stress and worry that we forget to actually enjoy it? Why, as a society, have we allowed our lives to become this way? Why do we feel like the world puts a lot of pressure on us or why do we put that pressure on ourselves? Has life always been this hard? Since we no longer have to struggle to kill our next meal have we turned that struggle into something else? Is it just the way our brains are wired through evolution?

(If you have any answers for this, please feel free to fill me in!)

This was a day last week.

I stared at the pile of laundry that has been begging to be folded for a while. I found dog poop still on the porch from yesterday that had not magically cleaned itself up. I gazed at the small amount dishes thinking how lucky only until I remembered that I am not sure anyone actually ate dinner last night.

I found my daughter sitting in the corner of a toy and stuff filled room reading a book. I think oh cool, she spending time by herself reading! Awesome, until I step in the first of many puddles.

"Hey Fin, why is the floor so wet? Did you pee?"
"No"
"Did water get poured all over?"
"yes, I think so"

I reach down to find her soaking wet. She had peed herself again, she had peed all over the room that is so full of stuff I can't even walk through it, I don't even know where to start cleaning up the mess......

I lost it.

I put her in the tub and I just walked away. I walked outside and sat down.

I screamed and cried.

I don't want to be a mom anymore, I don't want to be a wife anymore, I don't want to live this life anymore.

I don't want to be...

My 6 year old came to console me. Then he went and washed his little sister, got her dressed and gave me a hug.

This was a sh*ty day...

But the next day will be better... right?!

Isn't that what we always say, tomorrow I won't lose my cool and yell at the kids. Tomorrow I will wake up early and get that run in. Tomorrow I will stop eating so much crap and drink more water.

You Are Not Alone

We all have days that don't live up to the ideal parent in our head. We all tell ourselves tomorrow will be better (and sometimes it is). We all show the outside world a different view than how we feel.

You Are Not Alone

We (both moms and dads) are in this together. This is real life, let's try to accept that the days are not perfect, that we will yell at our kids and lose our sh*t, that our kids will still love us if we make them go to bed at 6pm to keep from killing them.

This Is Real Life

The sites of Seattle through my lens {Documentary Photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/10/the-sites-of-seattle-through-my-lens-documentary-photographer-tampa-fl Do you remember a few weeks ago when we were all certain the world was going to end? The winds and rain were going to sweep us away, the stores ran out of white bread and bottled water (but not butter bread or Gatorade), the gas stations ran out of gas and there wasn't a piece of plywood in sight? Yeah, that was fun. Well, in the midst of the panic, doom, gloom, and certainty that we were going to be powerless and roofless for the next month, I received a little email.

via GIPHY

This wasn't just any little email, this was an email that needed a response within 48 hours and I didn't know if I would even have a house in 48 hours. I had officially been selected as a class participant in Kirsten Lewis's Creative Live Class, I had 48 hours to say yes, with 10 days to book a flight and make sleeping arrangements, all while prepping for the biggest hurricane in history. No problem! Actually we got really lucky post Hurricane Irma. Minus some major leaf clean up in the yard, we went untouched. All the stress and anxiety passed, I booked the flights and talked 3 random photographer strangers (that were also going to the class) to shack up with me.

I made my early morning departure from TPA before the dawn. I was anxious to stretch this trip as far as I could. I love my husband and kids, but I was not passing up this opportunity to be a single adult for a few days, even if that meant sitting in an airport an extra hour. A quick layover in Chicago and I was whisked off again to Seattle. The plane ride was long and I enjoyed every minute reading whatever the hell I wanted to read.

Tampa airport, on the plane, Chicago airportPlane ride from TPA to ORD to SEATime spent at the airport and on the plane

Landing in Seattle I quickly caught up with a long time facebook photographer friend. One of those that I have spent long moments in deep PMs with at midnight, but never met face to face. I immediately felt a deep bond (the first one of many made over the next few days) and became fast friends over food and beer!

I spent the next two days deep in learning mode at Creative Live. My day filled with photographer learning mojo and no cell phone was good for my brain and my soul. I had many ah ha moments (some of which you can read here), some tears (and you know I don't cry), life affirming thoughts and overall warm gooey enlightenment goodness.

During the off hours I drank more than I ate (which is saying something because I ate some good food), wandered the streets after dark alone enjoying the sights and sounds of the city. Took in the smell of city life and salt air while just meandering, not really knowing where to go or what to see, but just learning the lay of the blocks around the airbnb I stayed at.

The final day I flew out super late (again to stretch this trip as far as I could) and walked the streets seeing all the typical downtown Seattle tourist things. Saw the Needle, wandered Olympic Park, sat in Victor Steinbrueck Park in gorgeous comfortable weather for over an hour with no interruptions,  walked along the inlet to the Pike Place Market, watched them throw fish and hawk their wares. I drank good beer, sat at the bar like an adult, had adult uninterrupted conversations and even hung out with a "band" from England called DOOF that really consisted of 4 guys drinking beer and shooting the sh*t. I spent adult time doing adult things like a F'ing adult. It was glorious.

The Pike Place Fish Market was a treasure trove for people watching. They put on a show with their sing song yelling, fish throwing and funny anecdotes. What was more fun was watching the people's reaction, the crowds cheer (after being told to) and the kid's eyes bright with amusement. If you go, make sure you see the monk fish up close and personal.

Above all, it was the friendships forged that filled my soul with warmth and belonging. The reminder that photography is a journey, not a destination and we all follow our own path. Above all, I was reminded that:

Why I take the pictures I do? {Real life Family Photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/9/why-i-take-the-pictures-i-do-real-life-family-photographer-tampa-fl Photograph your whyMy reason WhyWhy I photography the way I do as a documentary real life family photographer

Have you ever talked to someone who has no filter? They say what they mean, with no qualms sometimes with tact and sometimes not. As soon as you meet them you know exactly who they are, what they are about and how they view life?

This is me...

I have no filter, nothing stops the words that flow from my mouth (and sometimes that is cuss words in front of the more religious moms and their kids in my homeschool group). I can't help it, I am real life to the core. I have no style, like running shorts, flip-flops and a shirt that is too big that generally doesn't match. I drink beer out of a bottle unless it's a really great craft and that needs to breathe in a glass. I don't wear makeup, barely brush my hair and don't even own a purse. Girly girl or keeping up with the jones just isn't in my vocabulary. I was this way before kids and even more this way after...

This is real life to me.

No pretention, nothing but raw, real life. I can't help it, I have tried to be something I am not and I failed miserably.

The question of why comes up often, not so much in my interaction with clients, but in every marketing class I have even taken, any business book I have read, any workshop. They say if you know your "why" and are true to that why it will shine through your work allowing your clients to really fall in love with you. So if you haven't fallen in love with me yet, let me buy you some flowers and chocolates and keep reading.

My Why Is:

Real Life

That's it! That simple!

I know I talk about documenting your everyday life and preserving your memories but in all honestly (just keeping it real here), I shoot the way I do because I value real life. I love the rawness of childhood and family life, the subtle humor in the crazy things our kids do, the normal, not so exciting things (and the exciting ones too). The realness of it all. Like a great non-fiction book. I want to tell the story of life using pictures or video. It's not about documenting your days, it's about living your life.

So from this day forward, I promise to stay true to my why, to stop the "preserve the memories bullsh*t", and photograph your family just like I do my own. To make those perfectly imperfect environmental portraits, to ask myself what the moment feels like, to be true to your real life as I am true to my own.

These are the type of images I want to give you of your family. These are the type of images we should be hanging on our walls. This is real life.

Just a normal afternoon {Real life family photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/9/just-a-normal-afternoon-real-life-family-photographer-tampa-fl Our lives are fluid, ever changing, but sometimes those changes are bigger than others. Imagine if you could bottle up what your life is life right now before the next wave of change settles in. What if you could stop time for a few minutes, take a picture of what your life is like right now and then bottle it up to look back on? I am not talking about made up pictures of what life looks like on really really good days, I mean real life, every day life, the real moments. Did you know that you can do that (with a little help from me)?

This momma wanted just that, to remember real life as it is now before things morph into something new. Before kids go off to college, before the house becomes quieter and more empty, before life isn't the same crazy rush it is now. Before life shifts into a new direction.

Real life family photographer Tampa FL Real life family photography sessionJust a typical afternoon at home for this family. Getting all those right now real life moments set in stone before life changes.

This is a family of love, you see it as soon as you walk in the door. It is one of those homes that feels lived in (not in a messy kinda way) just in a way that everywhere you look you see memories. Memories on the walls, the bookshelves, you can feel the laughter in the air. It's a close family that you can tell understands each other with just a look, from mom and dad to the youngest boy. I found myself quiet (for a change) while I shot their session because there was such cohesion between the family that I knew I would intrude by opening my mouth. My words were not needed to ease any tension or break the ice because ice was never formed.

So I stood back like a fly on the wall and just watched through my lens. I watched board games be played, names be called in jest, silly faces made. I watched towel fights, and chases through the house, cannon balls and games of chicken in the pool. There were no quiet moments, just a home filled with laughter, love and typical sibling rivalry.

Friday Morning Fun at Alafia River State Park { Real Life Family Photographer | Lithia, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/9/friday-morning-fun-at-alafia-river-state-park-real-life-family-photographer-lithia-fl Real life family photographer Tampa, FL Alafia River State ParkFamily fun riding the trails

What does your family do for fun together? Are you the board game family that spends evenings around the table? Do you hike together or hit the waves? Maybe you all like to curl up on the couch and read a book together? This family rides bikes together. When they aren't training for another triathlon, they are riding the trails in the woods.

Mountain Biking has fast become a fabulous sport taking over the trails in woods all over the country. I realize often people don't associate Florida and Mountain Bikes, but there are some premiere places right here in the Tampa Bay area. Alafia River State Park according to The SWAMP Club "is one of the most favored off-road biking choices in Florida. Skilled riders are traveling from all over the state to ride this collection of scary drops, off-camber hillside ledges, high speed banked turns and intimidating ridge top trails. This single-track is built on the rugged terrain of what was once a phosphate mining site. Currently, there are about 20 miles of trails at Alafia." If you are into biking it a must ride location!

When I first met with this homeschool family to talk about a session it was hard to narrow down a great way to tell their whole story. I asked her what kind of session would mean the most to them and her response was "Natural, Unposed, Unrehearsed, Random, and Spur of the Moment. We hit all of those points right on the head! They are incredibly active, travel often and are not exactly routine based (one of the reasons I love them so much). They live life to the fullest teaching their children not only that important school stuff but the even more important life lessons like kindness, how to talk to people, how to the make most out of any situation, and how to always have fun.

Having long sessions like this with a family gives plenty of time for everyone to settle in and for the kids to let their guards down. This makes getting an environmental portrait so natural easy. It also allows me to steal moments that otherwise would go unnoticed. When I hang out for so long, my camera just becomes part of the environment.

Getting ready for the storm. Hurricane Irma {Real life photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/9/getting-ready-for-the-storm-hurricane-irma-real-life-photographer-tampa-fl A storm is coming.

Not just any storm, but a category 5 hurricane so far recorded as one of the largest storms ever to grace the Atlantic ocean. I am born and raised true Floridian. A Florida Cracker. Storms don't scare me. We don't live in a flood zone, or near the coast. I do worry about the winds. We live under like 16 huge oak trees that at any moment could take our house out, especially with winds over 150 mph. I come from a background of not panicking, but being prepared. We keep stock on water, keep the generator in good working order and the gas cans full. We also make sure the liquor cabinet is well stocked. Hurricane parties are a real thing here in the southern states.

I've seen the long lines at the gas stations today and the bare shelves where water was once stocked on the shelf. People are stocking up on bread, peanut butter, and spam. The gentleman in front of me at the store today was making sure he got the essentials.

There is a touch of hysteria in the air for sure even though the storm is days away without a clearly marked path. I have seen the question posted over and over about staying or going. Are you going to leave? When are you going to leave? Where are you going to go? Will you shelter local or drive to Georgia? Will you hunker down and ride out the storm? Maybe we will repeat our mountains camping trip from a few weeks past but I doubt it.

I think all of these are personal choices. Have a plan and be prepared no matter what the choice is that you make.

All this talk about leaving makes me wonder about what you would take. What are the most precious memories in the world to you that you know you could never leave the house without? Do you wrap them up water tight and hope for the best? Do you put them in the attic in case of a flood? Do you pack your trunk with pictures albums and frames? Your wedding pictures? That picture of you in the hospital holding your first born? Your own childhood pictures? These are things I contemplate at this moment in time. Sure I will fish out things like birth certificates and car titles to throw in my dry boxes, but what about my memories?

I keep all my images on an external hard drive, so that's easy to unplug and pack away in a dry box. Many images are uploaded to a cloud somewhere, enough to piece my life back together. The many albums both old and new will get neatly packed away in a suitcase and put in the car. Even though we probably won't be leaving, that should be the safest, driest place. I haven't decided yet on taking down the pictures on the wall. I think that will be a last minute decision, but it will be in my thoughts.

I think about the things in my life that are replaceable and those that are not. The memories that I don't want to part from, the images I don't want to lose.

Real life family photography Lithia, FL Preparing for Hurricane IrmaThe memories that I don't want to lose if a storm hits us. Real life family photography Lithia, FL Preparing for Hurricane IrmaThe memories that I don't want to lose if a storm hits us.

What are the things on your list that you hold dear, that will get packed up water tight and kept in a safe space? What is your memories preparedness plan?

Am I the right one? {Documentary Real Life Photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/8/am-i-the-right-one-documentary-real-life-photographer-tampa-fl Who Do I Choose? How do I choose? Is a documentary photographer right for you?

In today's photography world there are so many choices. Choices in photographers, choices in types of photography, different editing styles, the list goes on and on. So how do you choose the right one? Is a documentary photographer right for you, would you rather more of a lifestyle session or maybe a posed session is more your style? OR maybe like 90% of the world you don't even know there is a difference in all of this!

When you start looking for a photographer for your next family session the number one best place to start (after you have asked your friends, that neighborhood Facebook group and maybe looked through some Instagram hashtags) is by looking at a photographers portfolio. Scan through their website, pour through their latest images on FB and IG. Do their images speak to you? Do they make you feel something? Do you look at them and think, wow I want images like that? Does their editing style match your taste and your vision? Really look at their work and ask yourself if it is something you would hang on your wall! Do you just like their pretty pictures or do they make you feel something inside? Do they spark memories of your own, and spark emotions in you?

Family photographer Tampa, FL Real life family photographerDocumentary photography, telling the story of real life, candid, unposed moments. Family photographer Tampa, FL Real life family photographerDocumentary photography, telling the story of real life, candid, unposed moments.

Next thing to ask yourself do they fit in your budget? Remember that cheaper doesn’t always mean better and we all have a budget to work within. For some that might mean saving money for 6 months to have that dream session, asking the photographer if they accept a payment plan (many will!) or looking else where to find someone that fits. Your photographer understands that everyone has a budget, talk to them about what your budget really is or if you really want them, wait and see if they offer a sale!

Ask yourself:

  • Do you want digital images only to put on your computer
  • Maybe you want heirloom prints to hang on your walls or an album to pass along to future generations?
  • What about a keepsake box with loose prints?
  • Maybe you want all of the above?
  • Does your photographer blog their session so you can share that with friends and family?
  • If you only want digitals ask yourself why and what you really plan to do with them

Knowing these answers will help you narrow down your choices!

Other considerations is does their service match your needs? Are they a full service provider to help you through each step in the process from a preconsultation meeting to helping you put prints in your hands? Maybe you don't want that and just need someone provide you digital images and let you do the rest of the work.

Do they offer family films as well as a photography session? Is this something that you might be interested in?

Now let's talk about different types of sessions. Posed traditional sessions, Lifestyle session or Documentary sessions.

Traditional Sessions

These can be in a studio or on a location. They are typically more stiff, everyone is placed in a certain position, told to look at the camera and smile. Clothes generally are coordinated, makeup artists hired, background is pretty.

Lifestyle Session

These can also be either in studio or on location, although more typically they are done on location. While everyone is dressed in their coordinated Sunday's best, the session itself is much more relaxed. There is still a lot of direction usually given by the photographer, but mainly they are gentle cues to elicit warm funny reactions. These often take place in a gorgeous setting, sometimes with props, but not always.

Documentary Session

This is all about real life, real moments and very little to no direction. Sessions like this can take place in your home or other places that contain memories for you and your family. They can be centered around a daily activity or just your everyday real life. No special bought coordinating outfits, no cheese, no stand there do this. These sessions are more about photographing the pieces of your life that matter the most at this point in time (and yes those important moments vary from season to season, that’s what keeps it fun!). Think about a few things happening in your life right now that you would be over the moon to have in photograph giving you the chance to remember once they no longer happen, that is what these sessions are all about!

Does a documentary session sound like something right up your alley? Are you more interested in real life than dressing up in matching clothes and sitting on a couch in a field?  Want to be able to look back at this time in life with your children when they are heading off to college?  If this isn't the type of session you are looking for, no problem! I know lots of fabulous photographers in the area and I am more than happy to help you pick the right one!

The Dreaded Back To School Shopping {Real Life Family Photographer | Tampa, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/8/the-dreaded-back-to-school-shopping-real-life-family-photographer-tampa-fl Real life family photos and films Tampa, FL Back to School ShoppingSpending the day at International Mall in Tampa, FL picking out those perfect clothes to start the new school year.

Back to school shopping, the annual trek to the mall (or where ever you do your shopping). Buying clothes that we know will stay stain free for less than one week and that they will out grow in two. We take them shopping with us because we know if we come home with clothes it decreases the chance of them actually wanting to wear said clothes by 124%.  These are days that we view as hard when they are little, look forward to actually getting to spend time with them in their teen years, and shed tears when they are headed off to college. The things we buy change over the years. The clothes stay basically the same, but eventually, we trade out the glue sticks for high powered calculators (that cost as much as a computer).

This is a season in our life that while we are in the deep mud slogging through day by day we know that eventually we will look back and miss this silliness. Yes it's hard to see that now as I drown my sorrows in a nice tasty hefeweizen, but I know this momma, like me will enjoy being able to look back at this time in her life with a smile.

Shopping at Nordstrom's in International Mall for your kids is perfect. The personal attention is super helpful and so are the balloons, the kids play area and the toys. These kids had so much fun and mom, well coffee was close by.

After searching through lots of racks of super cute clothes, adding in a toy or two and bagging all the new goodies it was off to the next stop for more clothes and a few accessories (because sunglasses are a must for the first day of school).

Of course every trip to the mall should include a stop at the candy store! These guys are all set for their new year and mom is all set to ship them off. As parents we look forward to those quiet days when our kids are off to school with mixed emotions. On one hand we can't wait to binge watch our favorite adult only tv show, but on the other we miss those little grimy hands and loud noises. That's what makes real life photography and films so perfect. It allows us to remember these fun days as the seasons change.

Out and About: Plant City Train Museum {Real Life Family Photography & Films | Plant City, FL} http://www.mommagotsoulphotography.com/blog/2017/7/out-and-about-plant-city-train-museum-real-life-family-photography-films-plant-city-fl Family photography and films Lithia, FL Willaford Train MuseumTaking a short trip to the Plant City Train Museum

Spending time at the Willaford Train Museum in Plant City is one of my kids all time favorite short trips. I mean like I hear "Can we go to the train museum?" about 10 times a week. Seriously! It's a short trip and the kids always love it. Watching the model train is number one on the list, always, but there are lots of other fun stuff to explore as well.

There are lots of educational things to look at, maps of old train track routes, heavy nails to pick up. Plus stuff to climb on, levers to move and sounds to make. The train comes through town (both going north/south and east/west) multiple times a day. You can feel the Amtrak whizz by on its way to Tampa or watch it fly by from up on the viewing platform. The platform is open 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.

The museum is perfect for a 30 minute jaunt or part of a longer visit around Plant City. We often hit up The Corner Store for lunch before going to see the trains and then head over to Neumeister's Candy Shoppe for a sweet treat. There is also an awesome ice cream shop just around the corner.

The grounds and park around the train museum are high on the list of searched places for those of you hitting the painted rock craze hard! We often find cute rocks there and almost always see people hiding and searching!

Out in front of the museum is also a fabulous little lending library, so bring a few books to leave or pick up a new one!
